What are Panoramic X-Rays?
Panoramic x-rays are a type of dental x-ray that provides a 360-degree view of your teeth, gums, and jawbone. They are often used in conjunction with other x-rays to get a complete picture of your oral health.
What Are the Benefits of Panoramic X-Rays?
Losing teeth can make individuals feel inadequate, lose confidence in social situations, and limit chewing ability. Teeth loss may also alter how individuals speak.
Dental implants are a way to combat this by replacing the missing tooth or missing teeth. Restoring your teeth is beneficial in the improvement of your smile and self-confidence.
Why Would I Need a Panoramic X-ray?
There are many reasons why your dentist may recommend a panoramic x-ray. Some common reasons include:
- To check for impacted teeth (teeth that have not yet erupted through the gum line)
- To assess the severity of periodontal disease
- To plan for dental surgery, such as tooth extractions or placement of dental implants
- To check for tumors or cysts in the jawbone
- To assess stress fractures in the jawbone
- To assess the results of previous dental treatment, such as orthodontic treatment
- To evaluate the effects of tooth grinding (bruxism)
- To guide placement of braces or other orthodontic appliances
- To detect early signs of temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJ)
Are Panoramic X-Rays Safe?
Yes! Panoramic x-rays emit a very low dose of radiation, making them perfectly safe for both adults and children. In fact, they emit less radiation than you would receive from daily activities such as eating food or spending time outside.
Pregnant women and young children may be more sensitive to radiation than other individuals, so if you are pregnant or have any concerns about your young child, be sure to tell us your concerns so that they can take appropriate precautions.
At Veranda Family Dentistry, your safety is always our top priority. We use state-of-the-art equipment to minimize your exposure to radiation while still giving us the high-quality images we need to provide you with the best possible care.
How Often Do I Need a Panoramic X-ray?
The frequency with which you need a panoramic x-ray depends on your individual oral health needs and will be determined by your dentist.
For example, if you have impacted teeth, you may need periodic panoramic x-rays to monitor the progress of tooth eruption.
If you have had previous orthodontic treatment, your dentist may recommend periodic panoramic x-rays to monitor the stability of your teeth and jaws following treatment.
Most patients should have a panoramic x-ray every 3-5 years.
What Should I Expect During My Appointment?
The procedure for getting a panoramic x-ray is quick and easy—it only takes a few minutes! You will be asked to bite down on a plastic tab positioned inside your mouth while standing upright in front of the x-ray machine.
Once you are positioned correctly, the machine will rotate around you while taking pictures. It is important to remain still during this time so that the pictures come out clear!
Once the pictures have been taken, they will be reviewed by the dentist.
Your dentist will discuss the findings with you at your next appointment and develop a treatment plan accordingly.
