A dental bridge spans the gap that missing teeth create and attaches to your natural teeth on either side. The bridge has a pontic, or prosthetic tooth, which is seamlessly anchored to your existing teeth for proper fit and alignment.

Durable, natural-looking restorations

Dental bridges are used to fill the gap caused by one or more missing teeth. They are comprised of artificial teeth that are anchored by crowns cemented onto teeth adjacent to the gap.

We only use top-grade, natural-looking, and durable materials. Your bridge may be made from ceramic, or porcelain fused to metal in certain cases.

Bridges that are placed in the front of the mouth are made from aesthetically pleasing ceramic or porcelain that mimics the translucent quality of natural tooth enamel.

Your dental restoration will be created following the detailed instructions of our doctors who work closely with talented lab technicians to ensure that your restoration meets your expectations.

Other options for replacing missing teeth

Replacing a missing tooth, or teeth is vital to maintaining oral health. Even if the missing tooth is not visible, a missing tooth can cause multiple teeth to shift, lead to bite and/or jaw problems and increase the likelihood of periodontal disease.

While dental bridges have been the standard for replacing a missing tooth or teeth in the past, advancements in implant dentistry have made dental implants the preferred solution for many patients.

Although there are cases when a traditional bridge may be the best option, our doctors often recommend dental implants for tooth replacement. They will be happy to explain the pros and cons of each treatment option and customize your treatment to best meet your needs.

Why choose dental implants?

Placing a traditional dental bridge requires shaving down healthy teeth. Dental implants don’t require altering healthy teeth.

Traditional bridges are supported by crowns that are cemented onto the natural teeth adjacent to the missing tooth or teeth. Placing the supporting crowns requires that the healthy teeth be reshaped to accept the added bulk of the crown. Our doctors prefer to preserve tooth structure whenever possible, and dental implants do not require the alteration of healthy teeth.

Longevity is an additional benefit of dental implants. When properly cared for, implants can last a lifetime. By comparison, a dental bridge has an average lifespan of five to ten years. While a traditional bridge may cost less initially, longer-lasting dental implants frequently are the more economical option in the long run.

What are the different types of dental bridges?

There are four types of bridges, and the location of your missing tooth largely governs which option is best.

Traditional dental bridge

A traditional dental bridge is the most commonly used bridge, which relies on support from your natural teeth on either side of the missing tooth.

With a traditional bridge, we file the enamel off of your anchor teeth and equip them with a crown. We then attach the bridge with the artificial tooth to these crowns, which hold your replacement tooth in place.

Cantilever bridge

The cantilever bridge works the same way as a traditional bridge, except we only attach the artificial tooth to one side when natural teeth aren’t available on both sides.

This type of bridge doesn’t rely on crowned teeth on either side of the missing tooth. Instead, we use a metal or porcelain framework to attach the replacement tooth to your existing teeth.

Implant-supported bridge

We will turn to an implant-supported bridge when you’re missing more than one tooth. With this method, the dentist places implants into your jawline where your teeth are missing and attaches the bridge to the implants.

At Veranda Family Dentistry in Port St Lucie, we understand that you may not want to go without a tooth for very long. In many cases, we can have your dental bridge ready in as little as a few weeks.

We will take impressions of your teeth and design the dental bridge to match the shape, size, and color of your existing teeth.

We then place a temporary dental bridge so you can leave our office with a complete smile.

About two weeks later, you will return to our office to have the permanent dental bridge placed. We will remove the temporary dental bridge and check the fit of the permanent dental bridge. If everything looks good, we will then bond the dental bridge to your teeth.

You will then have a beautiful, natural-looking smile that you can be proud of.
